Tour a Historic 1908 home in Holyoke – “The Gray Birches” in 3D!

In early May, the Capture Team created a 3D model of a historic home in Holyoke. Built in 1908, this 15-room home on Route 5 features 6,000 square feet of living space and once belonged to papermaker Edwin N. White. Through this tour, the property at 1190 Northampton Street has been digitally preserved in our online archive. We hope you enjoy exploring it and appreciate the history of this stunning estate!

Nicknamed “The Gray Birches,” this charming property was built for Edwin N. White, a managing partner of The White & Wyckoff Manufacturing Company (W & W). Originally started in August of 1889, The W & W Manufacturing Company began with eight employees; E. N. White managed the finances while F. D. Smith headed the manufacturing aspects. They manufactured specialty paper products such as writing tablets, block pads, composition books and school supplies for businesses across the country. Their most lucrative stationery product was the Autocrat Vellum, writing paper of the finest quality.

In 1927, White & Wyckoff acquired National Papeterie of Springfield, MA, one of the oldest stationery companies in the country. They also owned the Cowan Truck Company, which they used for national distribution of their products. By the mid 1920s, White & Wyckoff operated the largest printing plant in Holyoke, utilizing 40 presses, which made it one of the largest printing plants in all of New England. By 1947, W & W Manufacturing had nearly 500 employees, and had over 100 artists working to design their boxes and greeting cards.

The business was eventually acquired by National Blank Book.

The Capture Team was privileged to have access to this home, and look forward to preserving additional historic spaces through the use of digital technology.
